Questions to ask before choosing a distribution partner

Evaluate market knowledge, operational capacity, communication and expectations before building a distribution relationship.

Look beyond enthusiasm

A prospective partner may like the product and still lack the resources to develop it. Ask which channels they serve, how they introduce new products and who will take responsibility for the day-to-day work. Specific answers are more useful than broad expressions of interest.

Discuss how the product reaches a buyer

Understand the route from shipment to sale. Who handles inventory, retailer education, customer questions and returns? Ask about the practical constraints in each step. Commercial expectations should reflect what the partner can realistically deliver.

Agree on communication

Decide which information you need to exchange and how often. Sales figures matter, but so do inventory levels, recurring objections and feedback from stores. A regular conversation helps both sides identify problems while there is still time to respond.

Define the first stage

Set a realistic initial scope with clear responsibilities and review dates. A defined first stage gives both sides a way to assess progress and learn. Plans should account for the time it takes to prepare materials, train people and make stock available.

Protect the customer experience

A distributor represents the brand in daily interactions. Discuss how the product will be described, demonstrated and supported. A lasting relationship needs shared expectations about what customers are promised and what they receive.
